We have been working for some time to get a more formal partnership with our key Council – Derby City covers 7 of the 12.5 miles of the canal line restoration and any use of the Derwent to reach the city centre.
The Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust is delighted to have received such a ringing endorsement by our lead Council to the completion of the restoration. With the major development of Infinity Park on Sinfin Moor designed to deliver high technology jobs working alongside Rolls Royce the city’s economy will benefit enormously. The access route to the new Park crosses the canal line where the canal crosses Cuttle Brook. There is therefore a need for a substantial bridge to allow all three elements to cross at the same point. Given that the restoration of this stretch is some way off at present the Trust has agreed that a temporary structure will be installed, but with provision for it to be replaced by the Council with a bridge over the canal, with the brook going through a siphon under the canal, a detailed design for which has been agreed. This will be put in place as soon as the Trust and Council have funding to complete the stretch to Sinfin Lane.
Following this mutually advantageous agreement the Trust is also receiving assistance from the Council in other areas of the canal restoration, not least of which is the building of the Derby Arm Boat Lift at Chaddesden Triangle, which is currently being developed and is seen as the catalyst to jump start the restoration.
