Dear Members of the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society

Welcome to the latest edition of the new format newsletter.

Work at the bottom lock in Sandiacre has increased somewhat! We now have a date to commence the dig out after receiving a better priced offer from another company that was half of the original cost for the work. We are holding a Public Meeting at the Bridge Inn on Wednesday 14th November to meet the local people and explain what will be occurring during the week of work.

Working Parties

The picture to the right shows Borrowash Bottom Lock a year ago, it’s looked a lot different today!

Work continues every Wednesday and we are planning the return of the WRGiE party next year.

We are also looking to start work in the Spondon area in November, once we get the all clear on land ownership.  With all the ground clearance we move a lot of old/diseased trees from the canal bed and banks, some of this makes very good burning material for stoves so if you are interested in buying some from us, or indeed if you know of any area that is secure for us to store some wood please get in touch with myself.

It is not all doom and gloom for the woodland, this month we are receiving 420 young trees/saplings from the Woodland Trust to plant in the local area, this time in the right place away from any stone work or footpaths.

We understand that this is a green corridor into the City and a life line for all kinds of birds, insects and wildlife, plus a joy to travel along, or indeed travel on so it is right that we replace more than we remove.

Planning Applications

Planning applications have been submitted to the local authority regarding the dig out at Draycott and indeed the cottages.

You can show your support for the dig out application by visiting: Erewash Council OnSearchline

The application number is 0818/0076. Insert the application number in ‘Application reference ERE/

Please also remember there is still chance to pledge a gift for someone at Christmas, we are only £6,000 short of our target, it would be nice to get there this year.

Remember, “A Canal is for Life, not just Christmas”.

Society Social Meeting

The Members meeting for November will be at the Wilmott Arms in Borrowash on Tuesday 27th at 7.30pm, our guest speaker will be John Lower on the subject of The Dawn Rose – Chesterfield Canal. This is the last meeting of the year so please show your support as usual.

AGM

I nearly forgot, we held our AGM in October and I am pleased to report that all the Committee offered to re-stand for election for another year and have been voted in, needless to say, you are stuck with me again for another year.

I would like to thank them all for the wonderful support and massive amount of hours that they and others, have put in this year.

One thought is that 2019 will be the year that sees water in our canal, a boat trip on the Derwent (going past the Silk Mill) and plans moving ahead for the Derby Arm project.

Social Invite

One of our regular working party helpers has offered us a special price on a family concert;

Heroes & Adventures!

Saturday 26th January 2019 – 6.00pm

Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham

We will meet high-tec superspies James Bond & Ethan Hunt in the themes from Goldfinger, Skyfall & Mission Impossible, swashbuckling Zorro from The Mask of Zorro, heroes from the wild west from The Magnificent Seven and Nottingham’s own legendary hero Robin Hood, as immortalised in Korngold’s Adventures of Robin Hood.  Real life heroes who fought in WWII will be remembered in Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bernstein’s theme from The Great Escape.  No concert of heroic music would be complete without a selection of film scores by John Williams and our programme will include Princess Leia’s theme and the themes for Superman & Raiders of the Lost Ark.  All that plus Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture!

Do join us on our musical quest for a great evening of superb music for all the family.
