The Trust AGM was held at Long Eaton Council Offices on 20th October and was attended by Trustees representing the Councils and the Development Group. The Trust recognised that the financial position had improved following the receipt of a grant of £60,000 from Derby City Council. News of the offer of abstraction rights was greeted positively and progress on the Sandiacre lock excavation was supported. It was also agreed to partner with Derby University on Student projects even though Nottingham Trent had also requested working with us.
The next general Trust meeting is to be held on Tuesday 19th January from 7.30pm also at the Erewash Borough Council offices in Long Eaton and all members are very welcome to attend.
At the Society AGM we were updated on the Trust activities for the year with progress being applauded by the members. Eddy Case took over the mantel of Vice Chair from Paul Birtles who stepped down after many years of very active service to the restoration. Eddy celebrated by showing the meeting how working parties had maintained and improved areas along the line in the past year. Not least of the achievements is the completion of laying our hedge at Draycott (almost 1,000 metres!) together with great coordination with the Borrowash residents. The Society undertake some of the more technical requirements including chain saw felling and residents undertake a lot of clearance work. Together we are making a difference!
Eddy also showed how we are placed to tackle Japanese Knotweed as he is now fully qualified to spray it for control and eradication. We can now offer the service to others in need – for a modest price of course.
Other than Eddy’s appointment I’m pleased to say that all the committee were reappointed and we welcome Keith Taylor to the general committee. However we are still looking for a social secretary to handle our event planning. Applicants please contact chair@derbycanal.org.uk
