Chairman’s Update September 2019
Dear Members of the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society.
Welcome to the latest edition of the newsletter,
I thought that I would take this month as a chance to update you all on a few of the projects under way and also include the coming months work.
Work is now coming to an end on the bridge work at Sandiacre, the road is open again but we are looking for a “graffiti” artist to decorate the facing of the works – not something that we would normally ask for but if you are an artist that fancies making a name for themselves please let me know.
David and a small team have been down to the bottom lock to tidy the area up and we will be continuing the upkeep of our land on that stretch, picture shows the lock at present. Work is being planned to clear the water and also landscape the groundwork in the coming Spring.
Barrows Galore!
A recent picture above, that came my way from the recent WRGiE visit in July, headed “The Red Barrows”.

Some off you may also have caught the Chair of the Trust, Chris Madge, on the local BBC news this week, very positive coverage and well worth looking for on the BBC iplayer, look under the A-Z for East Mids News for Sunday 1st Sept.
For those that didn’t, unfortunately the BBC iplayer link is no longer works – but our webmaster is attempting to get hold of the footage!
Society Meeting
The next members meeting will be held on September 24th with James Scott talking about The Clan Line, usual location at the Coach and Horses in Draycott at 7.30pm. Please also note for your diaries that we have our AGM in October with a guest speaker Paul Turner, member number 001, talking about the history and birth of the Trust/Society – more details to follow, but remember the this will be at the Royal Oak in Borrowash.
Extreme Gardening
With the start of September it means that we can re-start the Extreme Gardening projects that we excel in, work has already commenced at Draycott on the hedges along the Derby Road stretch.
We have a lot more work planned for the coming months so please feel free to turn out and help if you can – and it is not just physical work we need help with, if you have any spare time get in touch – we need you.
Draycott Cottages
Work at the cottages is progressing well, the picture above, may suggest that we have introduced “fracking” on our site, but fear not, it is the new water well for the supply needed at the cottages. Work on the other mains supplies is well under way and we aim to complete this project by June next year.
A special thanks
One final thank-you to David, our Vice Chair, for all his support and the well wishes of many of you following a slight hiccup with my health this month, it all goes to show how team work produces results but also highlights that we need more assistance to spread the load and ensure that we drive this project on to an end result.
